Autumn number rhymes that do more than count

Rhymes I use for subitising, one more and one less, and early composition.

We sing number rhymes every single day. But some of them only ever count down, and only ever in ones. With a few tweaks they can do a lot more.

Five little conkers

Instead of always taking one away, I ask: "What if two fell off the tree?" Children start to subitise the conkers left without counting them.

My favourite autumn rhymes

  1. Five little leaves, dancing on a tree
  2. Ten fat sausages, sizzling in a pan
  3. Five little pumpkins, sitting on a gate
  4. Hedgehog, hedgehog, how many spikes?

For each one I use real objects or a five frame, so children can see the number change, not just hear it.
