Making the most of your outdoor area in winter

Mud, puddles and frost: enhancements that work when it’s cold and grey.

Reception classroom photo

It's cold, it's grey and it gets dark at four. It's very tempting to keep everyone inside from November to February.

Please don't. Winter is one of the best seasons for outdoor learning.

Embrace the weather

  • Frozen puddles to crack, measure and investigate
  • Ice "treasure" blocks: small toys frozen overnight in tubs
  • Mud kitchens are even better when the mud is thick
  • Shadows are long and low, perfect for drawing round

Get the kit right

Waterproofs for every child, spare socks, and a box of gloves by the door. A cold child won't learn anything, so it's worth asking families early for donations.

And when it really is too wild, open the door and let them watch the storm. That's learning too.
