Your first week in Reception: what actually matters

Routines, relationships and resisting the urge to plan every minute.

If you're starting in Reception this September, first of all: congratulations. It's the best year group. Second: you don't need to plan every minute of the first week.

Honestly, you'll throw half of it away by Tuesday.

What matters

  1. Routines. Where coats go, how we line up, what the tidy-up song sounds like.
  2. Relationships. Learn every name by Wednesday. Use them constantly.
  3. Toilets. Show them. Then show them again.
  4. Parents. A smile at the door at 8.45 and 3.15 does more than any newsletter.

What doesn’t

Themed displays. Phonics groups. Assessment. All of it can wait a week, and the children will be in a much better place to start it.

Be kind to yourself, drink some water, and go home on time at least once. You've got this.
