About this resource
Expressive Arts & Design — Autumn 1: Marvellous Me!
A thoughtfully planned Expressive Arts & Design unit for Reception, designed for children aged 4–5 and loosely inspired by the theme Marvellous Me!
This six-week plan provides a clear progression through colour, mark making, portraiture, transient art, natural materials, observational drawing, self-portraits and simple design. Children are encouraged to explore, experiment, create, talk and revisit their ideas, with a strong emphasis on process rather than producing identical end products.
Each week includes:
Teaching knowledge and adult modelling
Key vocabulary
Independent activities and enhancements
Continuous provision opportunities
Suggested resources
The planning is designed to support children in making independent creative choices, experimenting with materials and techniques, developing their use of tools, representing themselves and their ideas, and talking about the processes they have used.
Alongside the practical experiences, the unit supports the EYFS Expressive Arts & Design ELG: Creating with Materials and relevant Development Matters statements, making it a useful starting point for both adult-led experiences and ongoing provision.
From exploring colour and marks, to creating portraits, experimenting with transient art and designing a meaningful memory box, the six weeks build naturally towards children becoming increasingly confident, curious and independent creators.
Perfect for Reception teachers and early years educators looking for purposeful EAD planning that goes beyond a collection of craft activities.
