Continuous Provision Progression of Skills – Year 1
A comprehensive 15-page guide designed to support the development of meaningful, purposeful continuous provision in Year 1, helping children build upon their EYFS experiences as they transition into Key Stage 1.
This resource provides a clear progression of skills across 13 areas of provision, including sand, water, construction, role play, small world, writing, reading, creative activities, investigation, loose parts, mud kitchen and outdoor physical development. Mathematical skills are also explored throughout provision.
Each area is organised into three stages: Beginning in Year 1, Developing and Extending, helping practitioners identify how children's skills, knowledge, vocabulary and independence can develop over time.
The progression includes practical examples of skills, suggested resources and key vocabulary to support thoughtful provision planning, adult interactions and opportunities for children to practise and deepen their learning through play.
Importantly, this is not a rigid half-termly progression or assessment checklist. It is designed to be flexible and responsive, recognising that children develop at different rates and that skills should be revisited, supported and extended according to individual needs and interests.
Ideal for Year 1 teachers and schools looking to maintain the value of play whilst supporting
