Expressive Arts & Design - Autumn 2: Sparkle and Shine!
A thoughtfully planned 7-week Expressive Arts & Design unit for Reception, designed for children aged 4–5 and inspired by the theme Sparkle and Shine!
This seven-week plan provides a clear progression through colour, pattern, artistic effects, printing, natural materials, colour mixing, design and simple construction techniques. Children are encouraged to explore, experiment, create, plan, evaluate and revisit their ideas, with a strong emphasis on developing creative skills rather than producing identical end products.
Each week includes:
Teaching knowledge and adult modelling
Key vocabulary
Independent activities and enhancements
Continuous provision opportunities
Music, dance and imaginative play opportunities
Assessment 'look-fors' to support observation and progression
The planning also includes two carefully sequenced projects:
Art Project (Weeks 4–5): Exploring printing techniques before designing, creating and evaluating their own celebration wrapping paper.
Design & Technology Project (Weeks 6–7): Investigating materials and joining techniques before planning, making and evaluating a Christmas decoration.
The planning supports children in making independent creative choices, experimenting with different materials and techniques, developing control when using tools, exploring colour and pattern, and explaining the processes they have used.
Alongside the practical art and design experiences, opportunities for music, movement, performance and imaginative play are woven throughout the half term, including exploring soundscapes, responding to music, developing rhythm and preparing for a shared performance.
The unit supports both EYFS Expressive Arts & Design ELGs: Creating with Materials and Being Imaginative and Expressive, alongside relevant Development Matters statements, making it a useful starting point for adult-led teaching and ongoing provision.
From exploring rangoli patterns and firework effects to creating transient art with natural materials, developing printing skills and designing their own decorations, the seven weeks build naturally towards children becoming increasingly confident, curious, independent and reflective creators.
Perfect for Reception teachers and early years educators looking for purposeful, progressive EAD planning that goes beyond a collection of seasonal craft activities.
Please note: This planning is fully editable and designed to be adapted to suit the needs, interests and experiences of your own cohort. Activities and projects can be adjusted to reflect the celebrations and traditions within your setting.
