About this resource

EYFS Maths Interaction Prompt Cards Supporting mathematical thinking through everyday interactions Help children to talk, think and reason mathematically with this practical set of EYFS Maths Interaction Prompt Cards. Rather than simply providing a list of questions, these cards support adults to notice what children are doing, choose purposeful prompts, extend their thinking and model useful mathematical language. The six cards cover key areas of early mathematical development: 🔢 Counting & Cardinality 👀 Subitising 🔢 Representing Number ⚖️ Comparing 🧩 Composition & Part-Whole 💭 Mathematical Reasoning Each card is organised into four simple sections: NOTICE — what to look and listen for PROMPT — questions and language to support the interaction EXTEND — ways to deepen children's mathematical thinking MODEL — key mathematical vocabulary to weave naturally into conversations The prompts are designed to be used during adult-led maths sessions, continuous provision, small-group work and everyday classroom interactions, helping practitioners move beyond simply asking children for an answer and instead encourage them to explain how they know, what they notice and whether they can find another way. Perfect for: ✔️ Reception teachers and EYFS practitioners ✔️ Maths leads ✔️ Adult-led maths sessions ✔️ Continuous provision ✔️ Small-group teaching ✔️ Supporting mathematical talk and reasoning ✔️ Developing consistency in adult interactions A simple, practical tool to help adults make the most of the mathematical opportunities already happening in your classroom. © 2026 EYFSWITHMRSS.
