About this resource

A practical six-week programme designed to support Reception children who would benefit from additional opportunities to develop the physical foundations behind fine motor control and early writing. Delivered through two short, practical sessions each week, the programme develops: • Shoulder stability & upper-body control • Hand & finger strength • Bilateral coordination & crossing the midline • Finger dexterity & in-hand manipulation • Hand-eye coordination & tool control • Pre-writing control Each week includes a clear focus, objective and two practical activity sessions, using simple resources you’re likely to already have in your setting. Also included is guidance for using the programme alongside continuous provision and a starting point and review sheet, helping you notice what children can already do, identify areas that may need further support and reflect on progress at the end of the six weeks. This isn’t about rushing children towards writing or a particular pencil grip. It focuses on developing the underlying physical skills that help children become increasingly confident and controlled when manipulating tools and making marks. Included: ✓ 6-week fine motor programme ✓ 12 practical targeted sessions ✓ Starting point & review sheet ✓ Guidance for practitioners
