Foundations for Learning: Preschool 3-4 Progression & Tracker
What comes before confident mark making, early counting, listening for sounds and all of those skills children will continue to build as they move towards Reception?
This resource looks at the important foundational skills developing throughout Preschool (3–4), helping you to recognise what children are already showing you, what might come next and how these skills can be supported naturally through play, interactions, routines and continuous provision.
Rooted in Development Matters and developmentally appropriate practice for children aged 3–4, the progression covers six key areas:
• Gross Motor & Physical Readiness
• Fine Motor & Hand Development
• Mark Making & Early Writing Readiness
• Early Mathematical Foundations
• Listening & Phonological Foundations
• Communication & Language
Each area is broken down into Start, Develop and Extend, with practical ideas for supporting development through provision and a ‘What might I notice?’ section to help practitioners look more closely at what children are showing them.
Also included is an editable whole-cohort tracker, allowing you to build a quick overview across the six areas and identify strengths, priorities and children who may benefit from additional opportunities or support.
The accompanying cohort analysis sheet helps you turn those observations into meaningful decisions about your environment, provision, adult interactions and next steps.
This isn't intended to be another tick-list or age-related assessment. Development at 3–4 isn't linear. Instead, it supports a simple cycle of observe → identify need → adapt provision → review impact, keeping play, interaction and the individual child at the heart of your decisions.
