About this resource

Foundations for Learning: Reception Progression & Tracker What comes before confident handwriting, counting, phonics and all of those skills we’re working towards in Reception? This resource looks at the important foundational skills that sit underneath so much of children’s learning, helping you to recognise where children are starting from, what might come next and how you can support this through your provision. The progression covers six key areas: • Gross Motor & Physical Readiness • Fine Motor & Hand Development • Mark Making & Handwriting Readiness • Early Mathematical Foundations • Listening & Phonological Foundations • Communication & Language Each area is broken down into Start, Develop and Extend, with practical ideas for supporting these skills through continuous provision and a ‘What might I notice?’ section to help you look more closely at what children are showing you. Also included is an editable whole-cohort tracker, allowing you to build a quick overview of your children across the six areas and identify strengths and areas that may need more focus. The accompanying cohort analysis sheet then helps you use what you’ve noticed to consider priorities, changes to provision, the role of adults and what you want to review next. This isn't intended to be another tick-list or age-related assessment. It’s about observe → identify need → adapt provision → review impact, giving you a practical way to use those smaller, underpinning skills to inform what you actually do in your Reception classroom.
