About this resource

Outdoor Provision Vocabulary Progression Maps Support high-quality adult interactions and purposeful vocabulary teaching throughout your outdoor environment with this collection of Outdoor Provision Vocabulary Progression Maps. Designed specifically for Nursery and Reception, each map provides age-appropriate vocabulary linked to a different area of outdoor provision, helping adults confidently model language, extend conversations and build children's communication skills through meaningful play. Rather than simply providing word banks, each progression map includes carefully selected vocabulary that develops from everyday language to more ambitious adult modelling, alongside practical prompts and questions that can be used naturally during play. Each map includes: Vocabulary progression (Emerging, Developing and Adult Modelling) Adult modelling prompts Tier 2 vocabulary Questions to extend thinking Links to Communication & Language Practical guidance for supporting vocabulary development The vocabulary has been carefully chosen to reflect children's developmental stages and aligns with the EYFS, making it easy to weave ambitious language into everyday outdoor experiences. It also complements a broader Reception vocabulary progression by encouraging children to use new language in meaningful, real-life contexts. Areas included: Sand Area Water Area Water Investigation Potion Bench Construction Area Stage Area Climbing & Gross Motor Loose Parts Shed Perfect for: Reception Nursery Preschool Childminders Outdoor learning environments EYFS leaders Continuous provision planning Whether you're introducing new vocabulary, supporting Communication & Language or developing confident talk through play, these maps provide an accessible, practical resource that can be displayed, referred to during provision or used to support staff professional development. © 2026 EYFSWITHMRSS.
