About this resource

Support a deeper understanding of children's mathematical development with this professionally designed progression document for Reception. This Mathematics Progression of Skills: Baseline to ELG has been created to support teachers in understanding how mathematical knowledge and skills develop from 3–4 Provision through to the Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Rather than prescribing when concepts should be taught, this document focuses on the progression of mathematical understanding, making it the perfect companion to any Reception maths scheme, including White Rose, Mastering Number, Power Maths or your own school curriculum. Each section explores a key mathematical idea through a carefully sequenced progression of learning, supported by guidance on the adult role, continuous provision opportunities and links to the EYFS Framework and Development Matters. This resource includes: ✔ A clear progression of mathematical learning from 3–4 Provision to the Early Learning Goals ✔ Seven key mathematical concepts: Counting Principles Subitising Composition of Number Comparison Addition & Subtraction Pattern Shape, Space & Measure ✔ Big Mathematical Ideas to explain the purpose behind each concept ✔ Adult Role guidance to support high-quality interactions ✔ Continuous Provision opportunities to encourage meaningful mathematical experiences ✔ Links to Development Matters (2021) and the EYFS Statutory Framework ✔ A professionally designed document that supports planning, assessment, curriculum development and professional discussion © 2026 EYFS with Mrs S.
