When do I need a teacher? Building independence

Using a visual prompt so children try three things before asking an adult.

"Mrs S, I can't find the glue." "Mrs S, he's got my scissors." "Mrs S, how do you spell dinosaur?"

By October I'd had enough of being the answer to every question. So we started Three before me.

How it works

Before coming to an adult, children try three things:

  1. Brain: can I work it out myself?
  2. Book or board: is the answer on the wall or in the room?
  3. Buddy: can a friend help?

Stick with it

The first fortnight felt slower. Then something shifted. Children started solving problems for each other, and I got to spend my time on actual teaching.

The poster we use is free in the library.
