About this resource

Precursive Pre-Writing Patterns Build the foundations for confident handwriting with this 15-page Pre-Writing Patterns Pack, designed for Nursery and Reception children developing the early movements needed for precursive letter formation. Before children begin forming letters, they need opportunities to practise the lines, curves, arches, loops and directional movements that make up each letter. This carefully structured resource helps children develop these essential skills through progressive tracing and mark-making activities. What's included? 12 individual pre-writing pattern pages, including ladders, slides, waves, hills, swings, curly caterpillars, zig-zags, loops and more. A Pattern Parade review page to revisit and consolidate different movements. Clear directional arrows and green starting dots to support correct movement patterns. Solid grey and dotted tracing opportunities, gradually reducing adult support. Independent practice sections to encourage confidence and control. Simple verbal prompts to support adult modelling. Links to the precursive letters that each movement helps children prepare for. Guidance for adults on introducing and using the activities.
